Getting ready for your first pack campout or hiking adventure? Every Cub Scout needs to know about the Six Essentials – a collection of must-have items that should go with you on every outdoor adventure!

Why the Six Essentials Matter

The Six Essentials aren’t just a list to memorize. They’re your safety net and comfort toolkit rolled into one. These items ensure young people have the tools they need before heading out the door, whether you’re exploring a local trail or spending the night under the stars at camp.

On every hike our Pack goes on, we start off the hike by talking about SAW and the 6 Essentials.

The Six Essential Items

Here’s what every Cub Scout should pack in their personal gear:

1. First-Aid Kit
Pack adhesive bandages, moleskin for blisters, gauze, and antibiotic ointment. You don’t need a huge kit – just the basics to handle minor scrapes and cuts that happen during outdoor fun.

2. Water Bottle
Always bring more water than you think you’ll need! Make sure your bottle is filled before you leave and large enough to last until the next water source or until you return.

3. Flashlight
This is for emergencies only, not for playing games in the tent. A small, reliable flashlight (or headlamp) can be a lifesaver when you need to see in the dark.

4. Trail Food
Pack healthy snacks that give you energy – think nuts, dried fruit, granola bars, or trail mix. Your den might even make trail food together as a fun activity before your adventure!

5. Weather Protection
Here in the Pacific Northwest, weather can change quickly! Pack sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and a hat for sunny days, but also bring a rain jacket or poncho and an extra layer for warmth. Even summer days can turn chilly or wet, and staying dry and comfortable keeps the adventure fun.

6. Whistle
Like the flashlight, this is for emergencies only. If you get separated from the group or need help, three sharp whistle blasts is the universal signal for assistance.
